Not like Need for Speed: The Run in 2011 had that already figured out and all.īut the worst for me is the gambling upgrade system (there's a reason The Crew dropped that with the sequel) and the unbalanced races/missions (although those aren't helped by everything above either).Īfter beating any mission or race you get a new upgrade card, which is randomized. Visually the game looks okay, but the game world has a really boring color palette during the day and for somehow being a fictional version of Las Vegas, the main city is barely alight during the night. That tiny tree on the sidewalk? Na, sorry, will completely crash your car. Worse, this also happens in the more urban environments, where some walls, fences or sidewalk objects are destructible, while others are not. The open world is also only partially open, because a lot of the country roads are actually corridors and don't allow you to drive through roadside barriers, making it hard to discern what won't and will stop you on a collision. Also having absolutely no information about elevation differences doesn't help either. The city parts however are difficult to navigate, mostly because of a confusing layout, which is compounded by the fact that the minimap doesn't differentiate between tarmac roads, dirt roads, alleys and shortcuts. The non-city parts are alright, featuring various serpentines across multiple biomes and even allowing some verticality for a more varied environemnt. What should also be good and enjoyable in a racing game are the tracks or in Payback's case, its open world, titled Fortune Valley, which is a rather mixed bag. You know, the basis of what should be good in a racing game. The gameplay consists of the usual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brake-to-drift physics (seemingly somehow worse than in the 2015/2016 reboot), making every car an understeer monster, fighting you at almost every corner and taking both the control and the fun out of driving your car, no matter the upgrades. Worse, the characters are cardboard cutouts of your basic street racing-/heist-related tropes and barely exist outside of quips and stilted back-and-forths. The story is boring, brings nothing new to the table and both story sequences and cutscenes seem to lack a ton of polish and heart. Need for Speed: Payback is terrible in my opinion. My third mistake was playing this for way longer than I should have. The first one was me thinking I would enjoy this after heavily disliking and bailing out of Need for Speed: Heat, its sequel, after about eight hours last year. I doubt I'll play any more.I love a good heist, no matter the medium.Īnd that's what always intriqued me about Payback, so with a recent sale, I thought 'Hey, why not?'.

I can imagine the game finding a home on PS4 because that platform doesn't have the wonderful Forza Horizon franchise. But I was thankful you can skip the ones in this game.

There's no beauty, though I'm not even sure that was attempted. Certainly doesn't have the natural flow of Forza Horizon 3's amazing Australian scenery. The story is as welcome as the one in The Crew. Feels like a Poundland Forza Horizon, with terrible dudebro writing from the mid-2000s.

Played an hour of this and very disappointed.
